The Science of Taste: Why Some Ingredients Dominate Our Plates?

Taste is a very important and distinguishing aspect of our food. Without taste, identifying any ingredient or separating it from others becomes nearly impossible.. That is why the human body consists of an organ called the tongue, which identifies taste and distinguishes one substance from another.

Different food items or edible ingredients have different tastes and flavors. They are considered to be included in a particular dish according to their taste and flavor. However, it may be noticed many times that some specific ingredients leave an unforgettable, strong taste on our tongue while the others may not even be noticed as being included. Let’s explore some of the reasons why this happens in the blog below.

Reasons Why some Ingredients have Overpowering Taste –

Below are some important and topmost reasons why some ingredients overpower our taste and leave their own mark on our tongue even after so long:

  • Consists of Much More Volatile Compounds –

Various volatile compounds, such as volatile oils, etc., have a very strong scent. This scent or aroma automatically brings a special and distinguishing taste with it, which spreads throughout the dish.

Due to the presence of these volatile compounds, some ingredients may become so distinctly noticeable that dishes can be known by their name as well.

  • Ingredients Belong to Intense Flavor Profiles –

Apart from the subtle and mildly-tasting ingredients, there are also some other ingredients which may have somewhat intense flavor and belong to the intense flavored profile or category.

These ingredients are mostly used as ground ingredients for almost every dish of a particular cuisine and bring its special flavor to those dishes. This is another reason why some ingredients overpower the dish and leave their own flavor, while others just get hidden inside their flavor and taste.

  • Imbalance Occurred while Adding Ingredients –

One of the rare but possible reasons why some ingredients have an overpowering taste on a dish may be because of their overuse. Sometimes, ingredients such as sugar, salt, etc., are too little for one person’s taste buds while too much for the other person’s taste buds.

That can be one of the reasons why those dishes may have a specific dominating taste of that ingredient, which is more in quantity.

  • Differences Between People and Their Cultures –

There are a lot of differences in cultures and individuals in this world. This difference can also be seen in one’s eating habits as well. While you are sensitive to a particular taste, the person next to you may not feel it so strongly. The same goes for cultural taste as well.

You may have a specific pattern of eating your food, having a specific taste, while the other person may have a different cultural taste. These differences may also be the reason why some ingredients may seem to have a little overpowering taste while the others may be mild in taste.

There may still be a lot of reasons why some ingredients may have an overpowering taste apart from the ones mentioned above. However, the topmost and most accepted reasons are these, and they clarify a lot of things for people as well.

How to Control the Flavor and Taste of Naturally Strong Ingredients?

To control the flavor and taste of some of the naturally strong ingredients, controlling their usage and amount is important. You can’t randomly or vaguely put these ingredients in the dishes and make them consume the taste of the whole dish/

Recognizing these ingredients properly and then using them wisely and in the right quantity will result in giving the perfect taste to the dish. Otherwise, it may cause more loss to the dish than the positive impact.

Final Words –

It is quite clear from the above blog that every ingredient has its own specific taste, which helps people in differentiating between them. This taste comes from some of the identical contents present in these ingredients or substances.

Therefore, those ingredients which emit a very strong taste have them because of some of the solid contents present in them. Identifying these contents will make the overall taste experience clearer and better for people, for sure.
